Commemorating the Naksa, Evoking the Nakba
Abstract
This edited volume, published with Electronic Journal of Middle East Studies, spring
2008, takes stock of forty years of Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Its contributors, both Palestinians and Israelis, delve into the economics, political and
legal mechanisms that have enabled the Israeli occupation to deepen during the Oslo
Peace process, entrenching an apartheid reality that makes the two-state solution
impossible. The volume also highlights the continuity between Nakba, which marks the
expulsion of the Palestinians with Israel’s creation in 1948, and the Naksa, which
followed Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, despite attempts by the Oslo
peace process to sever them. It recenters settler-colonialism as the paradigm for
understanding the conflict and the means to resolve it.
